Research

Drugs from Nature

A high percentage of our currently used therapeutical agents are compounds produced by microorganisms, plants and animals. This is especially evident in the area of antibiotics, where 75% of the clinically applied drugs originate from nature, and in cancer therapy with at least 50 % of drugs coming from natural sources.

The overall aim of our research is

  • to determine novel structural skeletons with pharmacological potential (lead structures) from marine sources (mainly marine bacteria and fungi) and plants
  • to identify novel bacterial and fungal sources (endosymbionts) as producer for  such compounds (secondary metabolites)
  • to analyze the biosynthesis of such compounds as a basis for structure modification
